OilEmpire Bookstore: order online via Powells

Support locally owned bookstores, especially those that promote dissident and original views. If chain stores have extirpated local, independent book stores in your community, a good full service bookstore that has internet ordering is Powell's in Portland, Oregon.

Any bookstore can order anything in print as easily as Amazon.com and the chain stores. Supporting diversity in media requires supporting local, independent bookstores.

Buying books directly from authors provides them with the bulk of the profits, which enables them (us) to continue to write. (this page is under construction, but open for buying books)

December 2, 2010

I’m disgusted by Amazon’s cowardice and servility in abruptly terminating today its hosting of the Wikileaks website, in the face of threats from Senator Joe Lieberman and other Congressional right-wingers. I want no further association with any company that encourages legislative and executive officials to aspire to China’s control of information and deterrence of whistle-blowing.

For the last several years, I’ve been spending over $100 a month on new and used books from Amazon. That’s over. I ask Amazon to terminate immediately my membership in Amazon Prime and my Amazon credit card and account, to delete my contact and credit information from their files and to send me no more notices.

I understand that many other regular customers feel as I do and are responding the same way. Good: the broader and more immediate the boycott, the better. I hope that these others encourage their contact lists to do likewise and to let Amazon know exactly why they’re shifting their business. I’ve asked friends today to suggest alternatives, and I’ll be exploring service from Powell’s Books, Half-Price Books, Biblio and others.

So far Amazon has spared itself the further embarrassment of trying to explain its action openly. This would be a good time for Amazon insiders who know and perhaps can document the political pressures that were brought to bear–and the details of the hasty kowtowing by their bosses–to leak that information. They can send it to Wikileaks (now on servers outside the US), to mainstream journalists or bloggers, or perhaps to sites like antiwar.com that have now appropriately ended their book-purchasing association with Amazon.

Daniel Ellsberg

9/11, Disinformation and the Anatomy of Terrorism
by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed

note: Interlink is the publisher of David Ray Griffin's books about 9/11, but The War on Truth is much better researched and avoids the obvious hoaxes that Griffin promotes in his work.

Nafeez Ahmed’s first book on 9/11, The War on Freedom, was acclaimed around the world for its meticulous compilation of facts about the event. Published just a little over a half year after the attacks, it was the first book to document the inconsistencies and contradictions in the government’s official version of what happened. This new book, The War on Truth, doubles the data and adds extensive new material to his original argument, including an analysis of the 9/11 Commission Report and wider discussion of US policies toward al-Qaeda. For anyone who remains uneasy about the alignment of reported facts and official narrative, Ahmed’s new book is an invaluable resource.

New Book Examines Possible White House Role in 9/11 Attacks
06-Dec-2002 review by democrats.com

In "The War on Freedom: How and Why America Was Attacked", Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed of the Institute for Policy Research and Development in the UK examines the big picture created by information from "respected sources including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Wall Street Journal" about what happened before, during, and after September 11, 2001. He reports on high-level orders preventing investigations of suspected terrorists before September 11; warnings that various well-known people received that caused them to cancel travel plans; the Air Force's deviation from standard procedures when the planes were hijacked on September 11; business connections between the Bushes and the bin Ladin family, and mysterious stock transactions just before September 11; and the inconsistencies in the stories from the White House about what happened that day and why.

Wargames -- Chapter 19 www.newsociety.com/News/rub_war.pdf

August 31, 2004 speech to the San Francisco Commonwealth Club
www.fromthewilderness.com/PDF/Commonwealth.pdf

"This is a detective story that gets to the innermost core of the 9/11 attacks. It places 9/11 at the center of a desperate new America, created by specific, named individuals in preparation for Peak Oil: an economic crisis like nothing the world has ever seen."

The attacks of September 11, 2001 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics and personnel. Crossing the Rubicon discovers and identifies key suspects - finding some of them in the highest echelons of American government - by showing how they acted in concert to guarantee that the attacks produced the desired result.
Crossing the Rubicon is unique not only for its case-breaking examination of 9/11, but for the breadth and depth of its world picture - an interdisciplinary analysis of petroleum, geopolitics, narco-traffic, intelligence and militarism - without which 9/11 cannot be understood.
The US manufacturing sector has been mostly replaced by speculation on financial data whose underlying economic reality is a dark secret. Hundreds of billions of dollars in laundered drug money flow through Wall Street each year from opium and coca fields maintained by CIA-sponsored warlords and US-backed covert paramilitary violence. America's global dominance depends on a continually turning mill of guns, drugs, oil and money. Oil and natural gas - the fuels that make economic growth possible - are subsidized by American military force and foreign lending.
In reality, 9/11 and the resulting "War on Terror" are parts of a massive authoritarian response to an emerging economic crisis of unprecedented scale. Peak Oil - the beginning of the end for our industrial civilization - is driving the elites of American power to implement unthinkably draconian measures of repression, warfare and population control. Crossing the Rubicon is more than a story. It is a map of the perilous terrain through which, together and alone, we are all now making our way.

Crossing the Rubicon is the best book that shows how and why 9/11 was perpetrated, focusing on the motive, means and opportunity (as any good homicide investigation does). Groundbreaking analysis of the 9/11 war games used to paralyze the air defenses over New York and Washington. Extensive discussion of the motivation of Peak Oil and how 9/11 was used to provide the pretext for the seizure of the Middle East oil fields.

The main problem with "Rubicon" -- it is a very large, dense book that is probably not the best introduction for those in denial about what happened to the United States. Even though the prose is written very well, it is not an easy read due to the psychological difficulty of the material.

An excellent summary is www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/011805_simplify_case.shtml
Crossing the Rubicon: Simplifying the case against Dick Cheney by Michael Kane

Ruppert has been subjected to a strange smear campaign on fringe internet websites that have sought to tarnish him with allegations about his alleged psychological state, that he is part of a coverup, and otherwise not worthy of attention by conspiracy theory addicts. These attacks seek to discredit the concept of Peak Oil as a motivation for allowing 9/11 to happen, make grotesque misrepresentations of Ruppert's positions (the most bizarre is the claim that he somehow supports elite plans for rapid depopulation -- the exact opposite of his views), and complain that "Rubicon" doesn't focus on their wild speculation and hoaxes based on blurry images.
These fringe voices do not dare describe the substance of the evidence published in this book - which is a subtle confirmation that the evidence is correct, since if there were major errors someone would provide comprehensive rebuttals. Books that expose major scandals often earn a smear campaign as a response from the conspirators - and the disinformation campaign against it is a textbook example of this behavior.

based on the incredible, impeccable database of mass media articles by the Center for Cooperative Research -- perhaps the best proof to offer those still stuck in denial about evidence that 9/11 was not a surprise attack

"Rubicon" and "Timeline" are perhaps the most comprehensive, accurate accounts of what actually happened on 9/11, and why. Rubicon is the best analysis, while Timeline is the best research guide to the details of 9/11.

Richard Clarke, Bush's "Terrorism Czar" and author of "Against All Enemies," used this book as part of his "Terrorism, Security, Intelligence" course he taught at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government (a tacit admission that elements in the Bush administration allowed 9/11 to happen?)

A Post-Election Wrap-Up: Iraq, 9/11, Drugs, Cheney, and Watergate Two
by Peter Dale Scott
27 November 2004

We now have four new books which between them strengthen the case that the Bush-Cheney Administration itself, taken as a whole, was at least partly responsible for the catastrophe of 9/11, not just by negligence but by design. I hope readers will buy and study them: Paul Thompson's The Terror Timeline, David Ray Griffin's The 9 /11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions, Mike Ruppert's Crossing the Rubicon, and Peter Lance's Cover Up. (I'm not impartial on 9/11, after having blurbed the first two books, and being mentioned in the third.)

Each book has its own different merits. Griffin's is the best introduction, Thompson's is the best research guide, Ruppert's is the strongest case against Cheney. Lance's Cover Up, while it says less about Bush and Cheney than the other books, is the best expose of how the 9/11 Commission became a seamless part of an ongoing cover-up, because of the involvement of some of its members and staff in prior pre-9/11 scandals, which a true investigation would have exposed. While his narrative is complex, it reaches to profound malfunctions in America's justice and intelligence establishments.

Note about Peter Dale Scott's forthcoming book: Chapter 9: "Al Qaeda, U.S. Oil Companies, and Central Asia" (July 19, 2005, revised 2005-09-01; excerpt from forthcoming book, The Road to 9/11) is on line at
http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~pdscott/AAAChap9aAzerb.htm

“THE TERROR TIMELINE is a tremendous resource that will give readers a truly independent means of judging our government in its errant conduct of the war on terror.”
-- PETER LANCE, author of Cover Up and 1000 Years for Revenge

“A spectacular resource that is an essential tool for anyone who is truly interested in understanding the events leading up to 9/11.”
-- CRAIG UNGER, author of the House of Bush, House of Saud

“This is the basic book on 9/11. Paul Thompson's work tells what happened that day, tracing the events leading up to the attack, and what has transpired since. After years of self-serving reports by ineffectual politicians in Washington, there is at last an independent report, based entirely on publicly known facts, that is thorough and reliable. Read it and decide for yourself whether there was a cover-up. It is truly remarkable. Thank God there are people like Thompson.”
-- JAMES RIDGEWAY, author of The March to War

“Paul Thompson's Timeline has served as the definitive source for any researcher attempting to penetrate the mysteries of 9/11. This book [could] effect a major change in the course of U.S. history.”
-- PETER DALE SCOTT, author of Drugs, Oil, and War: The United States in Afghanistan, Columbia, and Indochina

“Paul Thompson’s exhaustive and richly detailed research has now provided the world with a veritable treasure trove of 9/11 information. If you want to know everything about 9/11, you must read this book. If you want to better understand 9/11, you must read this book. Our intelligence agencies should be recruiting people like Paul Thompson, because he’s brilliant.”
-- KRISTEN BREITWEISER, co-chair, September 11th Advocates; member, Family Steering Committee; and wife of Ronald M. Breitweiser, WTC Tower Two

“Having lost loved ones on 9/11, we had the passion and drive to research and follow through with our quest for answers, but until we stumbled across Paul Thompson’s exquisitely detailed and well-sourced timeline on the Internet, much of the information that we found out about the events surrounding 9/11 were out of context or unverifiable. Paul’s timeline gave us a much-needed measure of clarity when our lives were filled with ambiguities.”

-- PATTY CASAZZA , co-chair, September 11th Advocates; member, Family Steering Committee; and wife of John Casazza, WTC Tower One

“Paul Thompson’s timeline is an invaluable tool and a must read for anyone who really wants to understand the events of 9/11. One can only hope that the 9/11 Independent Commission’s report, with its unprecedented access to millions of documents, is as detailed and thorough as this citizen’s account is. If the many questions raised by this book are ever answered, it would go a long way toward making us all safer.”
--MINDY KLEINBERG, co-chair, September 11th Advocates; member, Family Steering Committee; and wife of Alan Kleinberg, WTC Tower One

“For all of us who lost our loved ones on 9/11, and for anyone who seeks the truth about what happened on that awful September day, Paul Thompson’s timeline is where all research into the subject should begin. I am eternally grateful for Paul’s meticulous work and have referred to Thompson’s timeline since the beginning of my quest for answers into my husband Ken’s death. Thank you, Paul.”
--LORIE VAN AUKEN, co-founder, September 11th Advocates; member, Family Steering Committee; and wife of Kenneth Van Auken, WTC Tower One

A Basic Call to Consciousness: The Hau de no sau nee Address to the Western World
Geneva, Switzerland, Autumn 1977
copyright © 1978 by Akwesasne Notes, Mohawk Nation, Via Roseveltown, NY.

The following comprises a very powerful message given by the Hau de no sau nee (or traditional Six nations council at Onondaga) also called the Iroquois Confederacy "to the Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland in September, 1977. The Non-governmental Organizations had called for papers which describe the conditions of oppression suffered by Native people under three subject headings, with supportive oral statements to be given to the commissions. The Hau de no sau nee, the traditional Six nations council at Onondaga, sent forth three papers which constitute an abbreviated analysis of Western history, and which call for a consciousness of the Sacred Web of Life in the Universe."

This was published in Akwesasne Notes in 1978 and sent out on the net some time ago.

"What is presented here is nothing less audacious than a cosmogony of the Industrialized World presented by the most politically powerful and independent non-Western political body surviving in North America. It is, in a way, the modern world through Pleistocene eyes. . . .

The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity and the Renewal of Civilization
Thomas Homer-Dixon, new book
The Upside of Down sets out a theory of the growth, crisis, and renewal of societies. Today's converging energy, environmental, and political-economic stresses could cause a breakdown of national and global order. Yet there are things we can do now to keep such a breakdown from being catastrophic. And some kinds of breakdown could even open up extraordinary opportunities for creative, bold reform of our societies, if we're prepared to exploit these opportunities when they arise.

Thomas Homer-Dixon is Director of the Trudeau Centre for the Study of Peace and Conflict at the University of Toronto. His last book, the national bestselling The Ingenuity Gap, won the Governor General's Literary Award for Non-Fiction.

http://energybulletin.net/24452.html

Much more material on the book (excerpts, short film, study guides, etc.) is available at the website.
EB contributor Bill Henderson is very enthusiastic, writing a positive review and saying:
Thomas Homer-Dixon has a great new book out: The Upside of Down which is totally about energy and running out of cheap energy. It's a very readable experts book, as important as Diamond's Collapse. You ran a link to his latest NY Times op-ed - the book is 300 pages as good as the op-ed. ...what I'm really recommending is that you or one of your regular contributors get the book and do a substantive review. This is an important EB book and your readers need to know about it.
James Howard Kunstler has written:
Anyone who wants to get serious about the defense of civilization had better read The Upside of Down.
